Andean Bear: Ecuador's Elusive Cloud Forest King

Rare Wildlife

There’s a profound magic woven into the very fabric of Ecuador’s Chocó Andino, especially around Mindo. Here, the air hums with unseen life, and the cloud forest, thick with epiphytes, feels ancient and watchful. It's a place where you walk through a kaleidoscope of greens, hoping for a glimpse of something truly special.

My heart always beats a little faster when I think of the Andean bear, or 'Ukumari' as locals sometimes call them. These magnificent spectacled bears, with their unique creamy markings against dark fur, are the true kings of these misty peaks. To catch even a fleeting shadow amidst the towering trees, perhaps foraging for bromeliads, is a privilege beyond words. Their presence reminds you of the wild, untamed beauty Mindo diligently protects.

Have you ever dreamed of encountering such an iconic, elusive creature?
